Matt and I are taking steps to improve indoor air quality in our home. We experience the following problems:
- seasonal allergies
- allergies due to dander, shedding fur, litter box dust, and odors from our pets
Our long-term plan is to continue removing carpeting so we can restore the original hardwood floors in our home. Another step to make our indoor air cleaner and healthier is using an air purifier. We received the Levoit True HEPA Air Purifier (Vital 100) for a review.
Air purifiers reduce allergy symptoms, improve sleep, and make it easier to breathe by pre-filtering air before it reaches your lungs. In addition to using high quality air filters for your furnace or central heating system, a portable air cleaner such as the Vital 100 can improve your indoor air quality.
About Levoit Vital 100 Filters
True HEPA Filter
A True HEPA Filter is certified to remove 99.97% of microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns in size. This type of filter removes pollen, mold spores, fungi, germs, visible smoke, dust, and dander.
Preliminary Filter
To extend the life of the HEPA filter, the preliminary filter can be washed every 2 to 4 weeks of dust, pet fur, hair, and lint.
Activated Carbon Filter
The activated carbon filter helps to absorb odors from cooking, smoke, and pets. It also filters compounds such as formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and VOCs.
It is recommended that the filter is changed every 6-8 months.
The Vital 100 is shipped with the filter inside of the unit. After I removed the plastic wrap from the filter, I was ready to begin testing the purifier. Removing the filter is quick and easy. The cover is easy to open and close and the filter just presses into place.
Levoit True HEPA Air Purifier Vital 100 Features
Although the Levoit True HEPA Air Purifier Vital 100 has digital controls and a filter change reminder, you will not know exactly what has been filtered out of your air.
Air Changes Per Hour
The air change per hour rate is 3.3 and is recommended for small rooms up to 300 square feet. This rating is for how many times the purifier can exchange the air within a room with clean, fresh air per hour. The higher the number, the better. The Vital 100 would work best in a small room that you typically keep closed.
Noise Level
Air is drawn into the purifier and pushed through the filters using a fan. There are three fan speeds. Level 3 is recommended for particularly bad air quality. After running the purifier for 15-20 minutes on Level 3, though, you can reduce the fan speed. I cannot even hear the fan when it is on Level 1 unless I get very close to the unit.
Timer
An optional timer can be used to run the purifier for 2, 4, or 8 hours.
Energy Cost
Filters in a furnace or HVAC system only work when the system is running. Depending on your seasonal heating and cooling needs, you may not need to run your unit often. One advantage of using a portable air cleaner is that you can run it in one room at a lower cost. To work effectively, air purifiers should run continuously to keep air clean. The Vital 100 uses 55W per hour.
Lightweight
You can easily move the Vital 100 to different rooms in your home. It weighs 9.3lbs.
Benefits of the Levoit True HEPA Air Purifier Vital 100
- The option to set the timer for 2, 4, or 8 hours is a helpful feature.
- I’ve used air purifiers in the past that were a chore to clean. With so much dust and fur from our pets, I expect that I will need to clean the unit weekly. However, it is easy to remove the pre-filter for washing.
- The price is reasonable for the features and square footage of air purification.
- The unit is small enough that I think it would be a great addition to our travel trailer. In the past, I had problems with campfire smoke getting into our trailer. The air purifier is sensitive to humidity and only works in closed environments, though.
Additional Information
- The Vital 100 does not use ionizers or UV lights which have the potential to emit ozone.
- CARB Certified, FCC Certified, and ETL Listed
