Steps to Entering Giveaways Using Rafflecopter
(1) Log in with Facebook or an email address.
The first time you log into Rafflecopter using Facebook, you will be prompted to authorize Rafflecopter to obtain your name and email address. This information is logged with every giveaway entry that you complete so that Our Virginia Home can contact you if you’re selected as a winner.
(2) Complete the Mandatory Entry.
This seems to be frequently overlooked by giveaway entrants. On Our Virginia Home, we will state if there is a mandatory entry to help avoid confusion.
“Enter using the Rafflecopter form below from July 31st to August 15th, 2012. The only mandatory entry is is to answer the first question while all other entries are optional.”
Unfortunately, the Rafflecopter form is not setup to always have an option to show what entries are mandatory. If Our Virginia Home has an option to enter custom text for the entry title, we try to specify “Mandatory Entry” for clarification. However, some entry types have default text that cannot be changed.
So how do you know what is mandatory?
In this example, the Mandatory Entry is to visit the sponsor’s website and then to respond to the question by writing a blog comment.
(4) Complete Optional Entries
Once you complete the mandatory entry, you will see a longer list of additional entry tasks. These are all optional.
Additional Notes and Suggestions
(1) Leaving Blog Comments
When we request for entrants to leave a blog comment as an entry option, the task is often skipped or not completed properly. If you click Enter and forget to leave a blog comment, you will be disqualified.
Another type of entry option is to “Leave a comment on a non-giveaway post.” When this is requested, please visit a blog post that is not in the Giveaway category. If you see the Rafflecopter form on the post, it’s considered a giveaway post.
WordPress logs the email address that you provide when leaving a comment. Please do not include your email address with your comment where it will be seen publicly.
“I would love to win the blue towel set. Thanks for the chance to win this giveaway! virginia123 (at) yahoo (dot) com.”
(2) Tweet About the Giveaway
Many giveaways will include an option to tweet about the giveaway. If you see this message after confirming that you’ve sent a tweet, you can complete this entry option more than once. You can tweet once per day for each day that the giveaway runs. If you forget to tweet on each day, it does not count against you. You will still receive entry credits for each tweet that you completed.
Rather than logging into Twitter each day, you can use apps such as HootSuite to automate the process of tweeting about giveaways. HootSuite allows you to schedule tweets. You will still need to visit Our Virginia Home each day that you tweet in order to confirm that you have completed this entry.
(3) What happens to the information that is collected when I enter a giveaway?
Rafflecopter provides Our Virginia Home with a spreadsheet of all of the entries completed. The information is reviewed in order to confirm that duplicate entries have not occurred.
You will receive email communications for ONLY these reasons:
- If you subscribed to follow Our Virginia Home and/or a sponsor’s email list or newsletter
- You are selected as a winner
- Our Virginia Home has a question regarding one of your entries
A few companies have requested that we handover the entry spreadsheet to them after the completion of the giveaway. This is not OK with us, as we feel that it is our responsibility to protect your information. However, please keep in mind that giveaways hosted on an external site will not be administered by us. If we are not hosting a giveaway, but have partnered with a company to help promote it, you will see a notice at the bottom of a giveaway post.
(4) What information must be provided to receive a prize?
Your full name, shipping address, and telephone number. Many prizes will be shipped using UPS and FedEx so a telephone number may be required by the sponsor.
